Obituary for William “Bill” Northern

William “Bill” Northern, a beloved and long-time resident of Warsaw, Virginia, passed away on May 20, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was 86 years old, born on June 4,1938.

Bill was internationally known as an animal communicator and horse psychic, touching countless lives with his unique gifts and compassionate spirit. A true pioneer in his field, he authored two books chronicling his extraordinary journey: That Yank with the Crystal and Divining Guidance: Tales from a Life of Dowsing & Insight.

His work with animals took him around the world, forming lasting bonds with people and their animals alike.

Before embracing his calling in dowsing and animal communication, Bill was a successful businessman. He founded and operated WARDICO Distributing Company, which he led for 25 years. After retiring from the business world, he devoted himself fully to communicating with animals, pursuing a new chapter that brought him deep fulfillment.

Bill spent most of the year traveling to horse shows throughout the eastern United States quickly becoming a well-known and warmly welcomed presence in the equestrian community. He often escaped the cold Virginia winters by retreating to New Zealand, a place he held dear not only for its beauty but for its genuine natured, friendly people. He regarded the culture as one of the country’s greatest treasures.

Bill led a life full of purpose—always striving to teach, and just as passionately, to learn. He had a natural curiosity, often choosing the path less taken, ready for adventure and discovery. Whether through quiet guidance or bold exploration, Bill left a lasting mark on those around him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave freely to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Northern; two loving daughters, Debbie and Cathie Northern; and three cherished grandchildren, Colin and Caitlin Urwin and Carlin Corish.

A celebration of Bill’s life is being planned for later this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Richmond County Animal Shelter, PO Box 1371, Warsaw, VA 22572 — a fitting tribute to a man who gave his life to understanding and loving animals.

Bill will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the many lives — both human and animal — that he touched.

Remembering Bill Northern (International Master Dowser) Animal Communicator & Dowser
Bill worked with mostly horses and dogs but was generally able to listen to all animals.
Bill learned to communicate through dowsing. He learned that you can use the same senses to listen to plants and animals that you use to locate underground water.
